Snapp Automotive today announced that, after successfully integrating and testing MyScript’s handwriting technology as part of Android Automotive OS (AAOS), they are selecting MyScript as their preferred partner for in-vehicle handwriting recognition.

Snapp Automotive is focused on improving the in-car experience for drivers and passengers through the use of modern technologies such as Android Automotive OS, Android Auto, and Apple CarPlay. Part of this work involves identifying and resolving the unique challenges an automotive environment brings.

One of the key challenges is arms-length input, whereby a driver or passenger may be tens of centimeters from the screen, which makes it difficult to accurately use on-screen keyboards. Snapp Automotive looked at various options and found handwriting recognition to be one of the solutions to the problem, allowing drivers’ eyes and attention to remain on the road. It’s a finding echoed by all major regulatory bodies, which have approved handwriting as an input method while driving.

MyScript, with its long history of developing handwriting-recognition technology for various platforms, support for a large range of languages, and existing in-vehicle deployment experience, was a natural choice to provide the technology to deliver a production-grade handwriting-recognition solution.

Snapp Automotive and MyScript worked together to create a version of AAOS using a MyScript-powered handwriting-recognition input method. Their solution allows users who are comfortable using a keyboard to keep doing so, while also offering users the option to issue commands by writing or drawing with a finger on a large portion of the screen.

CTO of Snapp Automotive, Al Sutton, says: “MyScript provided us with the technical support we needed to make this a smooth and painless integration. We were able to work together to identify any issues and combine Snapp Automotive’s firmware experience with MyScript’s input experience, quickly resolving any potential issues we identified. We look forward to working with MyScript to deploy this solution in vehicles in the future.”

In the words of Olivier Cros, MyScript’s Director — Head of Automotive: “MyScript is delighted to work with Snapp Automotive, who have an extensive understanding of Android Automotive OS and great UX design capabilities. We believe that combining our strengths can bring a lot of value to OEMs and Tier1s”.
